Reasons Why People Fail to Quit Smoking

Most smokers have attempted to stop more than once. Experience indicates that many overcome the habit the first time they try. Others may have to try repeatedly, but persistence pays off. Many smokers who want to stop smoking “leave the door open” to pick up the habit again. Here are some reasons people who try to quit usually fails:

- They say it is too hard to quit, but although this may be true millions of people have already kicked the habit.

- Because smoking is a real pleasure, some people secretly hope they will not be able to quit.

- Craving is one of the signs of addiction. If one perseveres in doing without a smoke, it will eventually pass.

- For most smokers just putting their mind to it is just not enough. Smoking has become a big part of this person’s life, and unless he plans other activities during those times he is accustomed to having a smoke, he will begin smoking before he realizes it. E.g., if the smoker has been accustomed to smoking a cigarette or pipe after dinner while sitting in his easy chair and watching a ball game, he must plan other activities for that time or he will fail.

- Some smokers, hoping to stop but fearful they may not, keeping cigarettes or lighter and pouch stashed away just in case. This is like setting a match to dynamite and expecting that it will not blow up.

- Hanging out with other smokers can also be disastrous to your plans of quitting. Whenever possible avoid contact with other smokers until smoking is no longer appealing. Explain to your friends the reasons why. They will understand if they are real friends.

- Whenever you slip up and smoke again, remember that it is just one lost battle out of a long war. Brush yourself off and get back on your feet.
