Insomnia Causes and Information
Many illnesses and disorders may be the cause of your insomnia, including infections, asthma, emphysema, bronchitis with cough, heart palpitations, indigestion, leg cramps, and major psychiatric disorders. During or following menopause many women experience hot flashes, which, when they occur at night, will most often wake them up from sleep. If you have difficulty sleeping for any reasons, rather than taking something to help you sleep, you should see your physician, who will treat the underlying cause.
However, some presumably healthy people experience difficulty sleeping during their regular time to sleep. Some have trouble falling asleep, but once asleep, they sleep soundly the rest of the night. Others drop off to sleep in no time but wake up three or four hours later and either cannot go back to sleep or lie awake several hours before going to sleep.
The usual cause of insomnia that is not due to an illness or psychiatric disorder is the burdens, anxieties, and tensions of the day. On rare occasions, some exciting event or program may keep such people from going to sleep, but far more often, the problem is their inability to let go of things that have occupied their minds. It is also possible to put work and the problems of life out of mind yet are so tense over them that sleep is a long time coming.
